  • Make computer models in two and three dimensions
  • Do fieldwork to illustrate models properly

Types of scientific art include

  • Mechanical diagrams 
  • Molecular models (pictured)
  • Visual models of animals, plants, cellular structures
  • Illustrations of scientific laboratory equipment 

Scientific Illustrators often have degrees or minors in both science and art. They must fully understand their subjects.

Certification takes 1-2 years to complete and artist continue to obtain extensive training in medicine, science, and art techniques throughout their career.
