1. "She did whatever she could to keep them together. last week she'd even pawned her mother's emerald ring to pay their overdue property taxes." pg. 13 Scorched
In the beginning of the book Tritiny was willing to do anything to keep her and her grandpa together. The theme was to never give up on family and be willing to do anything for them.
At the end of the book the theme was never let anything stand in your way. You can over come any obstacle, and even if tears are shed the're only making you stronger.
The author is in favor of Tritiny, agreeing it's stupid to miss someone who had basically kidnapped you, so the author is bias against the "kidnapper".

In the middle of the book Tritiny is realizing that her life will never be the same, and she has to choices, fight give up or fight for the dragon that determines our future. She has courage.
"From what Trin could determine from the blue prints, these back hallways culminated a large underground garage, where a single elevator offeres an ungraded exit-----a chance to escape."
