GEOGRAPHY OF SCOTLAND

  • Because of the glaciers that receded after the Pleistocene Ice Age the geography of Scotland is a rocky, pockmarked landscape of mountains and rolling hills.
  • Scotland has over 800 different islands that are mostly hilly and rugged.
  • Scotland has dozens of deep lakes, cold water rivers and streams.
  • Mountains and hills: Sgurr Fiona and the Corrag Bhuidhe pinnacles on An Teallach and Ben Nevis from Sgurr a' Mhàim

NATURAL RESOURCES

  • Has a large amount of resources from fertile land which can be used for agriculture, livestock raising, oil, or gas.
  • Scotland also produces coal, zinc, iron, and oil shale.

POPULATION DENSITY

  • A majority of Scotland population (about 70%) live in the central lowlands where big cities such as Edinburgh or Glasgow reside
  • The other areas where the populations is concentrated is around the northeastern coast of Scotland around Aberdeen and Inverness

  • First Minister of Scotland is Nicola Sturgeon of the Scottish National Party
  • The First Minister is chosen by the Scottish Parliament, following a general election or following the previous First Minister's vacating the office.

  • Scotland's been doing great over the past five years being the worlds 14th wealthiest country ranking over the U.K. And it's GDP and Per Capita income has increased beneficially for them in the past five years.

UNEMPLOYMENT, POVERTY RATES, AND INCOME TAX

  • Unemployment rate is 5.9%
  • Poverty rate is 16%
  • Scotland doesn't have income tax until April 6th 2016

  • If Scotland would've become independent then it is estimated that they'd be £23bn in debt

GENDER ROLES

  • Men far outnumber women in elected political offices, the legal profession, and managerial and administrative positions in business. Women earn 72 percent of what men earn on average.
  • Women and men are socially mostly equivalent but not exactly equal even with the help of the feminist movemet

IMPORTANT TO SCOTTISH PEOPLE?

  • Independence or freedom from Britain. Some of them want to be an independent self supporting government.

  • The way they dress, and clans came from the Vikings
  • They adopted class or they'd talk articulated and men would wear fancy clothes which they got from Britain.

SOMETHING I'D HAVE A HARD TIME ASSIMILATING TO

  • Instead of asking where the bathroom is asking where the "toilet" is

MAJOR PROBLEMS

  • Scotland just voted on whether or not they wanted to gain complete independence from the U.K. And it was 51% no to 49% yes
  • They want the rights to the oil in their country and the money that the U.K.s been receiving for it.
