PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Susan Eloise Hinton was born in Tulsa, OK in 1948
When Susan was a freshman in high-school one of her friends was beat up.
The friend was a member of a gang called "The Greasers" and the person who beat him up was considered a nice kid.
15 year old Susan was so angry that she went home and began writing.
Ironically she was failing her creative writing class at the time.
When Susan was an 18 year old college freshman, The Outsiders was published by Viking.
Her publishers suggested that she use her initials so that male reviewers would not discount her work because she was female.
The Outsiders was instantly controversial, but sold millions of copies.
After publishing The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton experienced a three year writers block.
Her husband helped her overcome it by forcing her to write two pages everyday.
She later published:
- That Was Then, This Was Now (1971)
- Rumble Fish (1975)
- Tex (1979)
- Taming the Star Runner (1988)
In recent years she has written children's books and adult literature.
She lives in Oklahoma with her husband. She has a son named Nick.
