ADAPTATION ASSIGNMENT

SIZE

The size of a sea horse means that it is adaptive to its environment. It is able to hide amongst the seaweed and other types of sea foliage, away from predators that are foraging for food. These predators may be able to smell the sea horses, but they will have difficulty catching them. Team this with the speed of a sea horse and they are bound to have some trouble catching up with them and being successful in their hunt.

Camouflage

Another adaptive feature of sea horses is that they are often camouflaged into the environment, meaning that it is even more difficult for predators to spot them and track them down. They cannot be seen against some plants in the water and, as long as they remain still, they shouldn't be detected.

Reproduction

Sea horses are different to most animals. The male is the one who falls pregnant. The eggs are placed in the male's brooding pouch and he curls inwards once this occurs to give the best chance of fertilizing the eggs. Once fertilized, the male sea horse attaches himself to a nearby piece of plant and the eggs are hatched in his pouch and are spurted out when ready for birth.
