Hello, I'm Wilber the third. I was planted 40 years ago by a little girl. All through that time I have been through all the changes you can think of in weather. The cold, the heat, the snow, the rain. And I have seen changes in the world too. Like, where I am, there used to be a house, but then it got destroyed and turned into a school. The school children swing on me and play on me all the time, that keeps me company. In this story, I will tell you about my adventure throughout the seasons
It is spring time now, my favorite. Because the flowers are starting to come back and the SNOW IS GONE! I have been waiting all winter for this moment and it's finally come. HORRAY! My favorite part of spring is when my leaves come back. When they do, it is near the end of spring and more into summer. But oh well. It can be very cold in the spring, especially in Northern Michigan. The days are starting to get longer, and the nights shorter. Every morning I am woken up by school children. I feel a big tug on one of my branches. So I look and spot children hanging on me, in shorts and t-shirts, with the sun shining. So happy to see that because we hard a really bad, and cold winter. Spring is caused by the earths tilt, not by how far away you are from the sun. During the night, I see my favorite constellation, Great Bear. Which only occurs during the spring time.
Summer is a good time for me. By this time, all my leaves have grown in. The sun shines on me so brightly that my leaves glow. The temperature is in the 70s and 80s. That makes me feel great. The only sad thing is about the summer, is that the children don't visit me as much anymore. But in the fall the older ones will be gone and I will get to see new faces. In the night sky, I see all the constellations that I love. Like Lyra,Aquila, and Scorpius. They are so beautiful.
In the fall, I get to see all the pretty faces of the school children again. It is starting to get cooler outside. But guess what is happening to my leaves. They are changing color! Leaves change color because the chlorophyll, that gives the leaf it's green color, breaks down. But my leaves are still very pretty. The children at the school decorate me every year. They put down pumpkins by my truck and hang ghosts on my branches. That is my favorite part because I fell like I am part of Halloween, and dressing up.
"Drop" leaves are falling. No kids are pulling them off. Leaves fall off in the fall because the trees begin to shut down the food making process, because there isn't enough light and water.
By now all my leaves are gone. This is the coldest time of the entire year. A snow hill is covering half of my trunk and kids can climb higher onto me. They build a fort around me to try to protect me. All the other trees around me so beautiful. I wonder if I look that beautiful. By now, a couple of weeks into winter, I am ready to go back into summer. The sun barely showing behind all the clouds in the sky. I miss the sun and all of my leaves.
