PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SECTARIANISM IN NORTHERN IRELAND

How it Started:
During the reign of King James I, English and Scottish families were planted in Ulster.

Back then, two of the main reasons for plantations were to spread an area of rule and spread religion.

During the plantations, the Protestants were given all the good land, while the Catholics were confined into a small amount of boggy land.

The Protestants were given the majority of the land and often Catholics were not even allowed to work for the protestants.

Nowadays, sectarianism is more caused over whether people want to stay part of the United Kingdom, or if they want a United Ireland.

The EU funded an Irish Churches Peace Project, which was designed to bring the churches of Northern Ireland together ecumenically.
