Section 504

  • Occurred in 1973
  • Protects those with disabilities

The Purpose

  • Aims to ensure those with disabilities are afforded the same opportunities and benefits as it relates to education without discrimination in regards to ones disability

Implications for Schools

  • Schools are required to provide a "free appropriate public education" (FAPE) to each qualified student with a disability
  • Schools are to make appropriate accomodations based on individual student needs

Implications for Teachers

  • Teachers need to take into consideration the 504 plans of each student when designing instruction and creating the classroom environment to ensure that accommodations are being met.
