OUR THESIS STATEMENT!

Sectionalism was caused by the contrast in economy between the North and South creating a rivalry.

THE SOUTH

  • "The fertile soil and warm climate of the south made it ideal for large-scale farms and crops like tobacco and cotto
  • The South was based on large plantations, needing a large and free labor force. (Evidence 1)
  • South society was based on race. (Evidence 2)
  • The cotton gin, created by Eli Whitney, increased the need for slaves in the south.
  • The way slaves were treated made the north angry, causing a problem.

SOUTH CONTINUED.....

  • Everything was based on the plantation system in the south.
  • These differences caused problems between the two economies.

THE NORTH

  • The north was based on large factory industries that created many jobs.(Evidence 1)
  • North society was diverse and non-racial. (Evidence 2)
  • The factory workers were payed hourly wages. (Evidence 3)
  • The agreement to work for pay made it mandatory to work. In the south, slaves were forced to work.
  • The New England states disagreed with how masters treated their slaves.
