seminole history

  • The unique confluence of culture and crircumstance
  •  became todays Seminole Tribe of florida. 
  • The Seminoles can be traced back at least 12,000 years!

Where they live

  • The Seminole people originally lived in log cabins in North Florida.
  • But when they were forced to move to the swampy lands of southern Florida
  • They lived in homes called chickees.  A chickee had raised floor that 
  • thached to the ground

Art!

  • The Seminoles were Artistic, Clever people.
  • They produced colorful art using natural dyes.
  • They made baskets from natural Fibers to haul,
  • Food and store goods. They created incredible
  • Bead work.

Family life!

  • Seminole Family's lived in clans in villages.
  • The clans are led by a chief and elders.

Food

  • The Seminoles land was good for farming.
  • Tribes grew Corn, Beans, and squash.
  • The Cherokee Called these crops The "Three Sisters"
  • Tribes also hunted and gathered food in the woods.
  • Men hunted Deer, Turkeys, and squirrels.

Seminole Clohing

  • NATIVE AMERICANS OF THE HOT SOUTHEAST NEEDED LITTLE CLOTHING. 
  • Women wore skirts or dresses.
  • Men wore Breechcloths with a belt make of cloth,
  • Leggings, and Moccasins.
  • Children often wore no clothing  at all.

Traditions

  • Most tribes held ceremonies to honor nature.
  • The green corn dance  ceremony celebrated the first corn harvest
  • During this ceremony, people gave thanks for good crops and peace 
  • between tribes
this is not a Seminole celebration it is a different celebration

Weapons/Tools

  • The Seminoles Made knives out of a sharpened 
  • Seashells. The seminole tribe used other various 
  • Weapons

Movement

  • When the Seminoles were forced to move 
  • the Seminole tribe had to move to Southern Florida
  • into swampy areas.

climate

  • The climate where the Seminole's Lived was 
  • Hot and warm and sometimes cool in the summer.
  • In the winter it gets cold and below freezing.

Seminole's today

  • The government of the Seminole tribe 
  • of Florida is exempt from all federal or 
  • state taxes, although  individual tribal 
  • members are liable for the same state 
  • and federal taxes as any citizen,

Seminoles Today 2

  • The tribe does not have a court system; 
  • legal and criminal  matters resolved on the
  • community level are referred to the proper 
  • state or federal authorities.
