What are your plans for after high school?

What do you expect from college/post-high? Where does that come from?

Common expectations

  • Beer and Circus
  • Grades and Accolades
There are two common approaches to college.

First, the party scene. Let's call it "Beer and Circus."

Second, the performance scene. AKA "Grades and Accolades."

What's an idol? What are common idols post-high school?

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:1-2 (NIV)

"In view of God's mercy." everything hinges on God's mercy, His infinite love and unbounded grace.

The Christian's life begins and ends with God's mercy.

The definition of a Christian? Someone who allows God's mercy to be the FILTER through which they look at all people and the INSPIRATION for all their actions.

Transformed, Non-conformist

Romans 12:1-1 in a nutshell
The world has a pattern that it is trying to weave. Don't conform to it.

God has a love he is weaving into the world. Be transformed by it.

Live in view of God's mercy.

This term "transformed, non-conformist" comes from a sermon by MLK, when he calls all people to stand up against racial injustice in light of God's love for all people. Read the sermon here:

"education for responsible action is easily trumped by education for upward mobility." What's the difference?

Think about this quote: What's the difference between education for responsible education and education for upward mobility?

Read Colossians 2:8 and 2 Corinthians 10:5. How are they similar/different? Why are they important to remember when learning new things?

Daniel: non-conformist

Read Daniel 1-6 for stories of strong resistance

Babylonian Strategy

  • Assimilate new nations into culture
  • Retrain the best and brightest
  • Provide new language and learning
  • Provide positions of authority
  • Provide access to wealth/good food

All have been "Babylonianized" in some way. Name a few ways.

All have been assimilated and retrained and given new language into a culture that is not godly.

Daniel's Resistance

  • Stayed true in little things (diet, prayer)
  • Trust God for provision of big things
  • Make the sacrifice
  • Be courageous
  • Study hard
But Daniel didn't conform.

What sacrifices do you think you'll need to make to stay true to Christ post-high school?

Is it more difficult to stay true to Christ in a non-Christian environment? How so?
