PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SIMPLE SENTENCE

  • A simple sentence contains a subject and a verb
  • Ex. In the tub, the boy fell on his bottom.
  • Boy is the subject and fell is the verb
  • A simple sentence is also a complete thought

COMPOUND SENTENCE

  • Contains two independent clauses
  • They are connected by a coordinating conjunction
  • Ex. My husband was working, so I went shopping.
  • "My husband was working" and " so I went shopping", are the clauses
  • So is the coordinating conjunction

COMPLEX SENTENCE

  • Contains one independent and one dependent clause
  • Dependent clauses begin with a coordinating conjunction, after, if, or until
  • Ex. Though he was rich, he was unhappy
  • "Though he was rich", is the dependent clause
  • "He was happy", is the independent clause
