• Tried to spread their religion
• They were persecuted for their beliefs
• They were nice to Indian tribes
• They moved westward to find a peaceful place to settle
• In July of 1847 they reached the Great Salt Lake in Utah
• Many people started to farm there

GOLD IN CALIFORNIA

GOLD WAS FOUND

• James Marshall was working for John Sutter
• He was standing near the river when he saw gold in the river
• They tried to keep it a secret but soon everybody knew
• Gold brought thousands of people to California
• Though the miners were getting gold many of them could barely make a living
• By 1860 the gold rush was almost over
