SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHINGS

WHAT ARE THE CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHINGS?

The Catholic Social Teachings are teachings of the Church that encourage our society to be just and rooted in holiness.

LIFE AND DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON

The first Catholic Social Teaching teaches everyone to honor the gift of life. This includes abortion, murder, euthanasia, and even war. All of these things reject the first Catholic Social Teaching and endanger the lives of people in society today.

CALL TO FAMILY, COMMUNITY, AND PARTICIPATION

We are not only called to honor human life, but we are also called to participate in our families and communities. The family is the birthplace of prayer and respect. Through the gift of marriage, two people dedicate themselves to each other and start their own families. It is their job to teach their children the basic teachings of the Church.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Every person is born with the natural rights of life and the rights to decency of life. These rights can be anywhere from right to shelter, food, and even of marriage. Unfortunately, many people today do not have access to the basic needs and rights of life. It is our responsibility, as Catholics, to ensure the needs of all are fulfilled. We can do this by honoring and protecting human dignity and building strong, civil communities.

OPTION FOR THE POOR AND VULNERABLE

In the world today, there is a large gap between the rich and poor. Our society is judged upon how we treat the outcasts, the poor, and the vulnerable. Currently, we are not doing a very good job. It is our job, and the Church's job, to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. This could be anything from donating food, service work, or even volunteering at a homeless shelter. This can help make someone's day better and improve the lives of the poor and vulnerable.

THE DIGNITY OF WORK AND THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS

In our economy, it is essential that every person works to contribute to society. Working enables us to make a living in the world. But with work comes rights. All workers are subject to human rights, but what about the rights of workers? The rights of workers include the following:

RIGHTS OF WORKERS

  • Right to productive work
  • Right to fair wages
  • The organization and joining of unions
  • Right to private property
  • Right to economic initiative

SOLIDARITY

When God created humans, he created them all in the same image and likeness. This means that no matter what race, ethnicity, or gender we are, God sees us as equals. As creations of God, it is our job to promote solidarity in our world, today. This could be anywhere from working for peace or working for justice. God asks us to love our neighbors as ourselves; we must follow God's command by promoting peace and working to expunge violence.

CARE FOR GOD'S CREATION

The Earth is the home God created for us. It is our job to care for our world as God has intended. We must work as stewards of the Earth who improve the Earth and its well-being. This can be anywhere from caring for abused animals, recycling, or even planting a tree. All of these things improve the Earth and its environment. This will help the Earth sustain its vast diversities of life.
