severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID)
What is SCID?
SCID is actually a group of inherited disorders that cause severe abnormalities of the immune system. Mostly newborns get this disease.
SYMPTOMS
- poor growth
- rashes that look like eczema
- chronic diarrhea
- recurrent thrush in the mouth
- Failure to gain weight or grow normally
Treatment
The only cure available for SCID is bone marrow transplant, which provides a new immune system for the newborn.
DIAGNOSIS
Treating this disease in the first month of life is a very important thing cause the newborn can maybe still live. A diagnosis of SCID can be made in utero, which is especially helpful if there is a family history of immunodeficiency diseases.
How is it inherted?
It's a X-linked SCID is inherited disorder of immune system that mostly likely happen in male babies. But it can happen to any newborn. Boys with X-linked SCID are prone to infections cause by certain bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
Current research
They have also began to use gene therapy treatment it has been successful in clinical trials, but it still have complications.
