QUEEN ELIZABETH

  • The daughter of King Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn
  • Elizabeth took the reins of her country after the death of her sister.
  • She claimed the throne at the age of 25 and held it for 44 years
  • She kept England in ascendant through war, religious and political turmoil.

ART

  • The paintings were similar to medieval painting.
  • The paintings looked flat.
  • Techniques were not as developed.
  • Chiaroscuro is a method of depicting depth.

  • This time period is considered the Golden Age of English and drama.
  • It was the flowering of poetry.
  • William Shakespeare flourished during this time.
  • After the death of Queen Elizabeth 1 the tone of literature and drama changed for the worse.

MUSIC

  • The creations of Shakespeare were divided into three main categories which include Tragedies, Comedies, and Histories.
  • Elizabethan England Court Music had a refined sound and was played on the violin.

  • Elizabethan Street Music was the popularity of traveling minstrels and suddenly vanished during the time of bubonic plague.
  • Elizabethan Town Music was played by 'Waits' who were official musicians in English towns
  • Elizabethan Church Music was expected to be beautiful. Famous composers during that time were William Byrd and Thomas Tallis.

HISTORY

  • Elizabethan Era is considered one of the most fascinating periods in the history of England.
  • Elizabethan Sumptuary Laws dictated what Elizabethans were allowed to wear.
  • The era of the very first theatre's in England - William Shakespeare, the globe Theatre and Christopher Marlowe
  • Tortures and punishments included executions.
