sonnets

  • Shakespeare left 154 sonnets published in 1609
  • Many readers believe they reveal important parts about his life (Hamlet)
  • Readers believe this could be a true story because it was so full of detail
  • The sonnets in Hamlet were called Ophelia Sonnets or Letters to Ophelia
  • ("William Shakespeare" I)
The story is hinted at, rather than told. It concerns Shakespeare’s feelings toward a young nobleman who wronged him by stealing the affections of a sweetheart and by transferring his friendship to another poet. In the end the young nobleman is forgiven.
