The Sherman antitrust act was created in 1890 and named after Ohio senator, John Sherman. The act broke up many big companies and trusts.

The first major corporations to suffer from the act were the American Railway union, northern securities company, and American tobacco company. Rockefeller standard oil was also a monopoly that was effected.

The mlb is the only current monopoly in which the antitrust act does not apply to them because neither congress or the Supreme Court will overturn an ancient decision that baseball is merely for amusement, not an enterprise.
