SIOP Component: Strategies

  • Learning strategies are "the special thoughts or behaviors that individuals use to help them comprehend, learn, or retain new information." (pg. 142)

Types of Learning Strategies

  • Metacognitive - Implies awareness, reflection, and interaction
  • Cognitive - Applies to specific mental and physical tasks
  • Social/Affective - Deals with interaction among groups

The Continuum of Strategies

  • Teacher-Centered - Lecture, Demonstration
  • Teacher-Assisted - Discussion
  • Peer-Assisted - Role-playing, Tutuoring
  • Student-Centered - Graphic Organizers, Outlines

What about Dancelot?

Professor Dancelot is stuck on the Teacher-Centered end of the Continuum

Improving Dancelot

  • Professor Dancelot teaches a dance class, so we must adjust the strategies accordingly.
  • How can he utilize SIOP strategies to improve his class?

Improving Dancelot - Ample Opportunities

  • Professor Dancelot must diversify his teaching techniques to allow students to use all three learning strategies to understand the material.
  • For a social dance class, he must emphasize cognitive and social/affective learning strategies to allow his students to practice the dances he is teaching.

Improving Dancelot - Scaffolding

  • Scaffolding is usually associated with language, but it could also be a useful tool to reinforce dance moves.
  • Each dance move builds on the same basic foot patterns, so scaffolding previous knowledge in new lessons is a must for Dancelot.

Improving Dancelot - Group Strategies

  • Dancelot could employ the "You Are The Teacher!" strategy to help his students learn.
  • When students teach other students, they must achieve a degree of mastery in the subject they are instructing.
  • Dancelot must let his students interact and learn from each other.

How Will SIOP Help?

  • Dancelot's students are not engaged or attentive - SIOP strategies will help him create more diverse lesson plans and allow him to keep his students interested and focused.

How Will SIOP Help?

  • Dancelot spends a lot of time demonstrating and talking -he will save himself time and frustration by shifting teaching responsibility from Teacher-Centered to Student-Centered strategies.

How Will SIOP Help?

  • Students learn by practicing and rehearsing - By allowing his students to dance and interact, he will increase their comprehension and retention of his lectures.

The Payoff
If Professor Dancelot employs SIOP Strategies in his classroom, it wont be long before his students are the ones dancing a lot.
