WAS BORN ON JANUARY 4, 1933 WHICH MAKES HER 83 YEARS OF AGE! SHE IS KNOWN AS AN AMERICAN WRITER FOR CHILDREN’S AND YOUNG ADULT FICTION BOOKS. NAYLORS IS BEST KNOWN FOR BEST CHILDREN’S NOVEL SHILOH A 1992 NEWBERY MEDAL WINNER. NAYLOR HAS TWO CHILDREN NAMED JEFFREY NAYLORS AND MICHAEL NAYLOR. PHYLLIS REYNOLDS NAYLOR WAS BORN IN THE U.S.A. AND SHE GREW UP DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION WITH HER OLDER SISTER NORMA AND THE YOUNGER BROTHER JOHN. NAYLORS FAVORITE BOOK AS A CHILD WAS HUCKLEBERRY FINN. SHE BEGAN WRITING STORIES IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. WHEN SHE WAS 16 YEARS OLD, HER SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER ASKED HER TO WRITE A STORY FOR THE CHURCH NEWSPAPER.
SHE CONTINUED TO WRITE AND EVEN SENT HER STORIES TO MAGAZINES SUCH AS, HIGHLIGHTS, SEVENTEEN, AND JACK AND JILL.
SHILOH IS A LITTLE BEAGLE WHO WAS FIRST OWNED BY JUDD TRAVERS AND THEN GOT ADOPTED BY
MARTY.
MARTY IS A FIERCE AND BRAVE BOY WHO STUCK UP TO JUDD TRAVERS WHO WAS THREATENING JUDD THAT HE WAS GOING TO TELL THE CHEF THAT HE SHOT THE DOE OUT OF THE SEASON.
Judd is a mean and cruel also an unfair dude who captures dogs and inquires dogs. And shoots doe out of season.
Dara Lynn is a sister of Marty's. Dara Lynn is so a cute little girl.
Becky is a girl who always wanted a dog. Becky is a young girl with one older sister named Dara Lynn and an older brother named Marty.
The mom is a mother of 3 kids, Marty, Dara Lynn, and Becky. She is also a wife to Marty, Dara Lynn, and Becky's dad. And now Is a owner of Shiloh!
Marty's dad is a father of Marty, Dara Lynn, and Becky. He is married to Marty, Dara Lynn, and Becky's mother. He is now also a owner of Shiloh. The father knows Judd Travers:(
The setting takes place on a hill where Shiloh sleeps, eats, and basically lives
Chapter 1: In the story “Shiloh” in chapter 1, a boy named Marty lives in Friendly, West Virginia. You can tell Marty loves animals. Marty left his house after dinner to go practice shooting his gun, but not on animals. Then Marty finds a beagle. The beagle doesn’t come until Marty whistles. Marty walks home and the beagle follows him. The beagle Marty found wouldn’t leave Marty so Marty decided to name the dog Shiloh.
Chapter 2: In the book “Shiloh” Marty lied to Judd about Shiloh because Judd said “If I see you bring him to me, I would kick his stomach and not feed ‘em. Won’t treat him like I should”. Also when Marty was walking to his best friend’s house Judd gave him a ride and he knew that Marty is keeping something from him and he knows that he is going to find out.
Chapter 3: In chapter 3, Every Time Marty sleeps, he dreams of Shiloh. So his bed is in the couch in the living room because when his dad comes to eat he could just sit across from him. Marty wants to know how he could get money. He knows his dad I going to say “Collect some bottles, take ‘em for deposit. Pick up some aluminum cans, maybe, for the recycling place.” Marty decides he isn’t going to do that do his dad decides to help him with delivering mail. Then, Marty goes to see Judd, who was beating up poor Shiloh and other dogs. Judd starts to talk about what he does to dogs. That he says “git”, “Scam”, and “Out”.
Chapter 4: In chapter 4,Marty was sitting at the kitchen table eating a piece of bread spread with lard and jam when Marty hears a sound he knows is Shiloh. Marty folds his sandwich and sticks it in his pocket then goes out the front door. Shiloh was under the sycamore , head on his paws. Marty didn't have time to think how he promised Judd if he saw Shiloh loose again, he'd bring him back. He doesn't even know what he's going to tell his dad. All Marty knows is that he needs to get Shiloh away from the house, where none of his family members could see him.
Chapter 5: In this chapter 5,Shiloh is still in his pen waiting for Marty to come out. When he does Shiloh is all over him. They spent the day going around by the meadow . But all of that ends when Marty has to go in to eat dinner. He is abler of sneak some food out to Shiloh. They were having a great time but all of that changes when he hears a pickup truck. It was Judd looking for Shiloh. Marty is able to hold his ground and say that he didn't see Shiloh. Marty heard that the next time he saw Shiloh he was going to break his legs. Judd drives away and Marty was relieved he still got Shiloh
Chapter 6: In chapter 6, Marty’s friend David came home from Tennessee a couple days ago. David wants to come over Marty’s house but Marty doesn’t want David to come over because of Shiloh. Marty thinks it will be a better idea to got over David’s house. Marty starts walking and bumps into Judd Travers.
Chapter 7: In chapter 7,In the story ‘’Shiloh ‘’Marty wanted to tell his best friend David about Shiloh but Marty didn’t because he was afraid that he was going to to tell people about Shiloh and it would get to Judd travers and he would take Shiloh away from Marty and beat Shiloh and abuse him and Marty don’t want that to happen to Shiloh.
Chapter 8:In chapter 8,When Marty gives Shiloh biscuits or toast he gets sick. Since Marty feeds Shiloh, it’s getting harder and harder to see his ribs everyday. Marty knows his secreted can’t go on forever, and Judd wants to hunt on their land. Marty’s dad says no because if he lets Judd hunt on their land, then he has to let other people hunt on their land, but not because Shiloh was there because he didn’t even know about Shiloh. When Marty’s dad goes to deliver mail, he finds food for him in the mailboxes. Later Marty’s mom, dad and sisters go shopping so now, Marty and Shiloh have the whole house to themselves. While Marty and Shiloh are playing outside and rolling all around the hill having a good time, a similar voice that sounds like Marty’s mom comes upon them.
Chapter 9: In chapter 9, when Marty's mom finds out that Marty had the dog they promised each other something Marty's mom promised Marty that she wouldn't tell his dad. Marty promised that he would find somewhere for Shiloh to go. Then that night he went to bed he heard Shiloh whining and crying so he runs through the kitchen and out the back door to the hill where Shiloh is and his dad is following him with a flashlight. Marty and his dad find Shiloh “dead” or hurt from a Great Dane who had attacked him.
Chapter 10: In chapter 10, Shiloh is still very hurt. Marty and his dad gets in the car and Marty thinks his dad is bringing Shiloh to Judds. But he goes to Dr. Murphys instead. He said that it would take lots of stitches to get Shiloh better. He says Shiloh has to stay there for a night to see if he will live. It was the hardest thing for Marty to do but it was for Shiloh. On the way back home Marty and his dad had a conversation about what they are going to do with Shiloh Marty says that he will give his dad his bottle money for three years and the dad agrees but Shiloh might not even be alive.
Chapter 11: In the story “Shiloh”, Marty starts worrying about Shiloh after he and his dad dropped Shiloh off at Doc’s place. A couple hours after all this happens David comes over. David and Marty go to the meadow to fly a kite. On there way back to Marty’s house David sees blood. David asks why blood is all over the ground. Marty tells David about Shiloh. Now 7 people know about Shiloh. Doc pulls up in his car with Shiloh. Shiloh’s head is up. That means Shiloh is alive! Everyone runs to the car screaming ‘’Shiloh’’ with joy.
Chapter 12: In chapter 12,Judd found out that Marty had his dog all along because Dr.Murphy told Judd about the dog.But Judd let Marty take care of Shiloh until he is healed.Then Marty told his best friend about the dog Shiloh and he told his mom but luckily his mom didn't know who was Shiloh.David said “never mind it was a stray cat” .Now Marty is nervous because he thinks Judd is going to hurt him.
Chapter 13: In chapter 13,Marty can’t sleep because he knows that he has to think of a plan by next Sunday. Marty thinks that he and his dad could drive to Middlebourne to report Judd Travers for being mean to dogs, or maybe send an investigator to see in Judd really does kick his dogs.Marty imagines if that happened to kids instead of dogs… Marty’s mom tries to make him feel a little better. The next day Marty goes to visit Friendly to talk to David Howard and now he knows David feels just as bad as Marty does. Marty suggests that David’s aunt and uncle could look over Shiloh, but that couldn’t work because David’s aunt Pat in allergic to dogs. Marty goes out hunting and suddenly hears a shot fired and a doe to the floor, he looks from in the bushes, and finds Judd Travers red handed.
Chapter 14: In chapter 14, Marty found a deer Judd had shot on his way to Judd’s house. So Marty tells Judd “ Was just on my way over to see you” Judd look at Marty like he doesn’t know if he’s glad to him or not( (Later on) Marty tells Judd he’s not getting Shiloh back. Judd says “I want forty dollars for Shiloh and ofhe doesn’t have that money Marty has to work for him. When warty walks home, he can’t get the grin off his face :).
Chapter 15: In the last chapter Marty has to go to Judd’s to work for two weeks to pay for Shiloh. Some days are harder than others. But through time Marty feels that there is a bond with him and Judd. First Judd wouldn’t give Marty water then he gives him water and then puts ice in it. Judd had a throw back when he talked about the deal. Marty was ready to have Shiloh and not work. Finally on the last day, Shiloh and Marty head home calls him back and gives him a caller. Marty has fixed the problem and most of all now Shiloh is permanently his!
The theme is responsibility because Marty had to take care of Shiloh in the woods.
