Who's shop perspective adds the most value to a manufacturer's bottom line? The CEO's? The Sales Force? The Shop Workers?

The answer is yes to all. When all manufacturing employees hone their individual shop perspectives, find wastes, and SHARE what they see, they all have the power to strengthen the bottom line.

There are 7 perspectives aka 7 wastes aka 7 opportunities to make and save money. Think of seeing these differing perspectives as seeing through various colored sunglasses.

Transportation

unnecessary movement of tangibles
Transportation waste is the unnecessary movement of tangible items. Back and forth...back and forth...for no real reason at all.

Think materials, tools, packing supplies, etc.

What transportation waste do you see in your shop?

Inventory

"Just in case...when I need it."
Inventory waste is having too much that it makes it difficult to find what you need when you need it.

Pencils, paper, raw material, etc.

What inventory waste do you see around you?

Motion

Think "Ergonomics"
Motion waste is the unnecessary movement of people. Think ergonomics.

In your office space, do you often get up to retrieve notebooks, papers, office supplies, etc.?

Do you have your most-often accessed binders and files located closest to you? Would that help?

Waiting

...and waiting...and waiting...
Waiting waste includes having to wait for another person's action, approval, or go-ahead before you can get started on your puzzle piece.

Isn't waiting waste a waste of your precious time?

Over-processing

Anytime you do more for your customers that is more than what they want, need, value, and especially ask for, you are guilty of over-processing waste.

Never assume. Ask before you act.

Over-production

"Just in case...when they order again."
Over-production waste is making more than what is needed, wanted, valued, asked for, or ordered.

Oftentimes, shops forecast future orders based upon past history. Don't risk tying up cash by building orders ahead of time.

Defects

Defects cause you to go back and fix your mistakes. They are re-do's aka rework.

I can't tell you how expensive defects waste really is. Think material, labor, etc. It adds up.
