TIME TO MEET THE CHARACTERS AND WHERE YOU ARE ON THE MAP

CHARACTERS

First main character: Beatrice
(Tris)
Prior

BEATRICE PRIOR
Tris Prior is a 16 year old girl, from the faction of Abnegation. She unlike her brother feels like she doesn't belong where she is, and desires a change in her life. She makes a drastic one and while she goes through the process of getting into her new faction, she has to hide something that could get her killed.

Other main character: Four
(Tobias)
Eaton

FOUR
Four is a former Abnegation member, then switching to Dauntless at the choosing ceremony. His past is kept a secret, he hasn't told anyone. He is now at the age of 18 and is a Dauntless member. He works in the control room and when initiates come, he is a trainer.

Supporting Character: Caleb Prior

CALEB PRIOR
Caleb Prior is the older brother of Tris. Along with her, he was also Abnegation until he transferred to Erudite. He hesitantly gives information to Tris when she asks about what may be going on. He then becomes close to the leader of Erudite to obtain more information.

Supporting Character: Jeanine Matthews

JEANINE MATTHEWS
Jeanine is the leader of Erudite, the faction that values intelligence. She is the woman who is behind the masterful plan. By most people she is seen as brilliant, but to our main characters she is a vain and cruel mastermind.

Supporting
Character:
Peter
Hayes

PETER HAYES
Peter Hayes is Candor born and raised, later transferring into Dauntless. His past is not mentioned in the book, but it is easily seen that he is an enemy of Tris. He holds strong competition for intitation, along with that he becomes jealous easy and can be violent at times.

SETTING:
This book is set in dystopian time, which means the future. This is 100 years into the future, after a war that completely and in theory destroyed almost all of America except for a few major cities. Such as Chicago, which is where our story takes place.

RISING ACTION

RISING ACTION
This takes off right after the choosing ceremony, where the young adults of Chicago choose where they will live out the rest of their lives. Tris is now faced with the first test of her initiation. Train jumping and a 7 story free fall, into what they think is a pit with nothing at the bottom. Tris catches the very end of the train, passing her first test. Then the time comes to jump off the building. Nobody else steps forward, so she does. She jumps, being caught by a net, then being claimed first jumper.

RISING ACTION CONT.
After jumping, the next day training takes place. Being the small girl Tris is, she is weak and has a difficult time finding power behind her punches. She gets banged up pretty severely when she faces Peter in a fight, losing. After more hard work she eventually excelled at her defense and won a few of her fights. She placed just above the cutting point for intitation, which means she advances to stage two. Mental.

RISING ACTION CONT.
During stage two, Tris becomes ranked first out of everyone easily. Because of her Divergence, in the simulations she is able to do things normal people can't. Her time is nearly three times faster then the leading person at about, three minutes. Halfway through this stage, Tris notices that things from Erudite are being brought in to Dauntless. She also notices that Jeanine is personally watching as each person goes through the simulations, to see if anyone is caught using their Divergence.

RISING ACTION CONT.
Between stage two and three Tris decides to go to Erudite herself to see if her brother Caleb knows any information about what is going on. They talk for a while and she doesn't find out much. She becomes somewhat upset, because she knows Caleb is holding something back. As she leaves, two Erudite guards take her to a room. Her and Jeanine talk about how Divergence threatens the faction systems. She is then brought back to the Dauntless compound, where she is inserted with a 'tracker' that is actually a simulation serum.

RISING ACTION CONT.
The morning after her Erudite visit, she awakens to an odd surprise. Everyone is stuck inside a simulation, giving them commands. This was specially designed by the Erudite, so it doesn't work on Divergents. She quickly realizes this when one is aimlessly walking around, then getting shot and killed. She acts like everyone else, with some suspicion she makes it to the Abnegation sector. Then, arriving there she realizes what is going on. A mass murder of the Abnegation people.

RISING ACTION CONT.
Soon enough both Four and Tris are found out and are beginning to be hunted down. They escape for the most part until they are caught by the Dauntless. They are brought to Erudite, where Tobias is put under a serum and Tris is sent away to be executed.

RISING ACTION CONT.
After being put in a tank of water, Tris's mother saves her by shattering the glass. They both escape the Abnegation compound and work their way to a safe house where some Abnegation people are waiting. While traveling there they run into a few people, they kill all of them. Then right after they run into more, her mother gets shot and killed. Tris then keeps moving to the safe house.

RISING ACTION CONT.
When arriving at the safe house she doesn't stay long, only long enough to have the bullet removed from her shoulder. Then she makes a plan to get to the control room where the simulation is being controlled at the Dauntless Compound. They travel by train to get to the compound.

RISING ACTION CONT.
They arrive at the compound, and the entire thing is nearly vacant except for a few guards. One of them being Peter. He threatens to shoot her, but before he can she shoots him in the hand. He then follows along, helping. As they enter a hall, it's full of Dauntless members. Tris's dad goes before her, shooting down almost everyone. He then gets shot and killed as well. Tris pushes past him and keeps moving toward the control room. Where she finds Four.

CLIMAX

CLIMAX
When Tris walks in the door, she sees Four sitting at the computer controlling the simulation. She tries to get his attention, and when she does he doesn't recognize her and sees her as an enemy. He punches her down and she retaliates quickly. The fight until Four has Tris pinned to the floor, the gun barrel to her head. She tries one last time and speaks a few words. His muscles finally relax and he breaks out of the simulation.

FALLING ACTION

FALLING ACTION
Tris stands guard and waits as Four begins to shut down the simulation. As this happens, on the screen she watches as innocent people from her former faction being killed every minute. She watches as her friends, who are now just robots kill them without even knowing what they are actually doing.

DENOUEMENT

DENOUEMENT
Four finally gets the simulation shut down. Everyone who was under it returned to normal and finally realized where they were. Four takes the hard drive for the simulation, then they run along with the rest of their small crew to the only safe haven left. Amity.

CONFLICTS

CONFLICT 1
Tris needing to get into Dauntless without exposing her Divergence. (Person vs. Society) She cannot expose her Divergence because the Erudite think they are bad for the faction system, thus making everyone else think that as well. Then if she is discovered to be Divergent, she will be killed.

CONFLICT 2
The Erudite trying to overthrow the government (Person vs. Society) If the Erudite have the control on how to deal with the Divergent people the way they want to. Another reason for the Divergent people to hide who they are.

MAIN CONFLICT
Divergent people have to hide who they are because people think they will ruin the perfect government they have. (Person vs. Society)

POINT OF VEIW

THEME

THEME
{Don't be afraid to be different, it may end in good or bad, but no matter what. Don't let things get in the way}
A big part of identity here is figuring out where you fit in. Which is pretty hard for most young people, including Tris. Instead of being able to be happy in one of the factions, Tris's main identity is that she's Divergent. That means that no matter how hard she tries, she's never going to fit into her world. She will be different from everyone. But what is different sets her apart.
