SHORT TERM MEMORY

Short term memory:
The capacity for holding a small amount of information in mind in an active, readily available state for a short period
of time.

Maintenance rehearsal:
Memory through repetition.
Chunking: process of grouping items to make them
easier to remember.
Working memory:
System for processing and working with
current information.

CAUSES OF SHORT TERM MEMORY LOSS

  • Medication/nutrition deficiency
  • Alcohol, tobacco, drug use
  • Depression, stress
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Head injury, stroke

FINDING THE CAUSE

  • CAT scans and MRI's
  • Physical exam
  • Neurologic exam
  • Blood/urine test
  • Nerve and imaging test

TREATMENTS

  • Change in medication
  • Healthier eating schedule
  • Help with depression
  • Physical therapy (ex: stroke)
  • Lowering blood pressure
