Most American's didn't want a war. However on April12 ,1861when Confederate soilders attacked fort sumter off the coast of South Carolina, the civil war began.

On December 20, 1860 South Carolina seceded from the United States. Ten more states follow.

The war to free slavery was a bloody and brutal war some slaves joined in the war and many died.
