WHAT IS SICKLE CELL ANEMIA?
Sickle cell anemia is a disorder of the blood caused by an inherited abnormal hemoglobin.
Cause
Sickle cell anemia is genetic, you are born with it or you gradually get it over time.
SYMPTOMS
- Fatigue and anemia
- Pain crises
- Swelling in hands and feet
- Bacterial infections
- Lung and heart injurgy
How do you know?
The doctor test your blood and smear a small bit under a microscope, this is called a sickle prep. Before birth tests, they will have to grab a sample.
Treatment
For treatment you can do a few procedures such as exchange transfusion, blood transfusion and patient controlled analgesia. However they also give you pain killers.
