PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Sickle Cell Disorder-
It is a disorder in which the body makes sickle shaped blood cells which can block blood flow and could cut off oxygen in your body.

Sickle Cell Disorder:
We chose this disease because we had heard of many football players getting the diseases, and it is the most common genetic disorder in the United States.

Symptoms-
Physical: shortness of breath, dizziness,severe pain in fingers, headaches, possibility of infections happening are more likely.

Symptoms:
Mental- depression, anxiety, stress, and cognitive difficulties due to brain disease from Sickle Cell.

Treatment:
-Daily use of antibiotics for infections.
-Ultrasound scans for strokes
-Check red blood cell count from the doctor.

Prognosis
-Life expectancy has improved in America from what it was. Now it is in the mid 40 years of age.
-The quality of life could be affected even though most have a productive life, no sports though, the people with the disease would have to be in a support system where treated.

Occurence:
-Transmitted through genetics (parents)
-In the U.S. over 70,000 people have the disease. About 1,000 babies each year are born with it.
-It is common in many ethnic groups but is most common in African decents.

Mutation of Sickle Cell Disease:
- It can be found on chromosome #11!!! , because that's the one that transports oxygen to the lungs and parts of the body ( hemoglobin).
-Incomplete dominance
-recessive trait!

Mutations are in the HBB gene (hemoglobin) cause the sickle cell disease
