- The Union was trying to get the river fortress. They had tried and failed twice before.
SPECIFIC DETAILS
- Grant opened fire on May 21st with more than 250 artillery
- First siege of Vicksburg failed- Union lost 1000 men
- USCS surrendered after 40 days on July 4th
OUTCOME
- The Union gained control of Vicksburg. This split up the USCS
SIGNIFICANCE
- With the union in control of Vicksburg, the USCS wasn't able to communicate or send supplies down the river. This is what divided the USCS.
