GENERAL INFO

  • Vicksburg, Mississippi
  • USCS- Lt. General John C. Pemberton
  • Union- Major General Ulysses S. Grant

EVENTS LEADING UP

  • The Union was trying to get the river fortress. They had tried and failed twice before.

SPECIFIC DETAILS

  • Grant opened fire on May 21st with more than 250 artillery
  • First siege of Vicksburg failed- Union lost 1000 men
  • USCS surrendered after 40 days on July 4th

OUTCOME

  • The Union gained control of Vicksburg. This split up the USCS

SIGNIFICANCE

  • With the union in control of Vicksburg, the USCS wasn't able to communicate or send supplies down the river. This is what divided the USCS.
