PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SILICON

BY ALLISON SADDLER

HISTORY

  • Used by the Egyptians in 1500 BCE
  • Silicon was isolated as an element in 1824
  • Jons Berzelius a Swedish Chemist discovered the element
  • It was used in Egypt but where it was discovered is not known

HISTORY

  • It was used for the manufacturing of glass containing silica
  • Silicon is used by early civilizations to make glass
  • The origin of silicon is the latin word silex (flint) or silicis (Hard Stone)
  • The language is Latin

SILICON

  • The element symbol is Si
  • The atomic number is 14
  • The atomic mass is 28.0855 amu

SOURCES

  • It is located in Norway, Russia, Brazil, and Canada
  • It is mined because we get it directly from the ground
  • It has little processing of compounds from nature
  • Because silicon is found in the Earth's crust it is abundant throughout the Earth

SOURCES

  • It makes up 27.7% of the earth
  • It is the second most abundant element in the crust
  • It is the seventh most abundant element in the universe
  • Silicon is never found in its natural state.
  • It is a combonation of oxygen as a silicate ion (SiO4) in silica-rich rocks such as obsidian, granite, and diorite

PROPERTIES

  • Its physical state is a solid
  • Its melting point is 1410.0 degrees celsius
  • Its boiling point is 2355.0 degrees celsius
  • Its density is 2.329g/cm cubed

PROPERTIES

  • It is a reactive element
  • It reacts with halogens

COST

  • Silicon in pure form is worth $5.40 per 100g
  • Silicon in bulk form is worth $0.14 per 100g

UNIQUE PROPERTIES

  • It is an octahedral crystalline with similar physical and
  • Chemical similarities to the dimond form of carbon
  • Seventh most abundant element in the universe
  • Siliceous dust can cause a serious lung disease called silicosis

E-SHELL ARRANGEMENT

USES

  • Silicon chips are the basis of modern electronic and computing
  • Silicon is an important component of steel
  • Silica found in sand is used to make concrete, brick, and, glass
  • Silica is used to make fire-brick which is a type of ceramic
