SINGLE MOTHERS

  • Single Mothers are more likely to be in poverty than single fathers.
  • In most cases, Mothers are usually the single parent because they have never been married.
  • In most cases, Single fathers are usually the single parent due to divorce.
  • Mothers living on their own earn about 2/3 of what fathers living on their own do.
  • Over half of 37 Million Americans living in poverty were women.

THE DIFFERENCE

  • The different between living with only a father, only a mother or living with both parents.
  • Only 21% live in poverty when living with only a father.
  • Only 13% live in poverty when living with both parents.
  • When living with only a mother, below poverty line is 45%

Child care

  • A poor single mother spends 32% of her total weekly income on child care.
  • This % nearly doubles when more than 1 child needs care.
  • Some single parents have no high school diploma, leaving them with mostly jobs that only pay minimum wage.
  • Single parents with 2 or more children have little $ after paying taxes and child care.

access to education

  • Single parents often spend half of their income on house expenses and a third on child care, leaving less than 1/3 for educational purposes.
  • Without financial aid, Single mother students have little/no means to help their financial issues leading them to drop out of school.
  • Nearly 2/3 receive an "automatic zero" to their request on financial aid award, compared to 29.6% post secondary students without children.

  • U.S single mothers make the majority, according to U.S Census Bureau, out of 12 Million Single parent-families in 2015 more than 80% are lead by single mothers.
  • Today, 1 in 4 children under the age of 18, a total of 17.4 Million, Become raised without a father, and nearly half about 45% live below the poverty line.

Helping Hands

  • This 13 year community non profit organization helps assist impoverished single mom families while the mother is pursuing a college education and financial independence.
  • This organization has raised $2.75 Million in serves and financial aid provided to hundreds of single mom student families since 2002.
