Clothing

  • Sioux clothing was both functional and beautiful.
  • The clothes were made by elk skin, deer skin and tanned buffalo hide.
  • These qualities made them not-too-hot, not-too-cold
  • moccasins, shirts, leggings, breech cloths, dresses, and capes 
  • used vegetable dyes to dye porcupine quills and turtle shells

They hunted buffalo, deer, and other animals. They gathered fruits and vegetables. Some of the Sioux people also grew crops.

  • North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

Beliefs

  • wheel represents the circle of life and death
  • represents the unity in the Great Spirit or Grandfather
  • The Sun Dance was the most practiced ritual
  • The rite included fasting, singing, dancing, drumming, the experience of visions, self-torture.

Government

  • women had no say in government.
  • Each village council selected a chief

Customs and rituals

  • Holy men and women received other rituals during trance-like states
  • guardian spirit gave them their own personal songs and rituals.
  • Sioux boys, and some girls, went on a vision quest

Activities and entertainment

  • The sioux divided tasks between the sexes.
  • Women were responsible for cooking and cleaning
