WHO

  • Sir Francis drake was the eldest of twelve son.
  • He later grew up to be captain slave trader, navigator, and a great politician in that era.

WHAT DID HE DO

  • He was a vice admiral
  • Was granted a privateer commission
  • Captured the port of nombre de Dios which was a drop off point for silver and gold in peru

WHERE

  • They left Plymouth England on 1577 with six ships.
  • They sailed to Brazil, and through the perilous Strait of Magellan.
  • At Tierra del Fuego natives gave Drake and his crew food and water
  • They sailed by Panama where he pirated Spanish ships and settlements for food and treasures
  • He landed on the island of Cano, off the coast of southern Mexico. In North America, he claimed the land he called "Nova Albion" for the Queen
  • They then crossed the Pacific Ocean and sailed by Indonesia, through the Indian Ocean, past the Cape of Good Hope, and back to Plymouth, England

WHEN

  • On December 13, 1577 he left with 6 ships
  • In September 1578 he sailed through magellean route
  • By 1579 he sailed through panama and pirated the ships for food and treasure
  • In 1580 he returned to the queen and received (£10,000).

FUN FACTS ABOUT MR DRAKE

  • Died on January 27, 1596
  • He was a pirate for the queen
  • First Englishman to sail around the world and defeating the Spanish Armada
  • The King of Spain put a bounty on Drake's head of 20,000 ducats. That's around $7 million in today's money!
  • The Spanish nicknamed Drake "El Draque", which means "The Dragon".

  • He assembled a huge fleet of Spanish warships called the Spanish Armada and sent them to crush the British and take over England
  • They sent them into the middle of the Spanish fleet. The captains of the fleet panicked and scattered
