Timeline

  • 1563: Began his sailing career
  • 1568: Went on expedition with the Hawkins fleet.
  • 1568: Got captured by Spaniards at San Juan de Ulua and then escaped.
  • 1572: Embarked to attack the Isthmus of Panama
  • 1573: Attacked a rich mule train and scored 20 tons of gold/silver

  • 1577- Queen Elizabeth I sent Drake on an expedition against the Spanish 
  • 1577- Bad weather forced Drake to return to Plymouth for repair
  • 1577- Drake set sail on December 13 again with 5 ships and 164 men
  • 1578- All of the ships except for Drake's were forced to go back
  • 1578- Drake advanced, attacking Spanish ports and pillaging towns

  • 1579- Drake was forced to travel around the globe to avoid the Spanish
  • 1580- Drake arrived back at Plymouth
  • 1581- Drake was given knighthood
