WHO WAS DRAKE?

  • He was born in 1541 in England.
  • His family was very poor.
  • His parents both died when he was 12 years old.
  • When he was a kid he lived in a tiny old boat.
  • He was a British explorer.
  • He died in 1596 when he was 55.
  • The Spanish called him el Draque meaning the dragon.

WHAT DID DRAKE DO?

  • He was the first English navigator to travel around the world.
  • Queen Elizabeth was jealous of the great empire in the New World.
  • She ordered Drake to attack Spanish settlements so that England could claim them as their own.
  • He took riches of the settlements for the queen and himself.

WHERE DID DRAKE EXPLORE?

  • Most explorations were around in the Pacific Ocean,a bit around the Alantic Ocean and around in the Indian Ocean.
  • When he died his body was placed in a lead casket and dropped between two sunken ships.

WHEN DID DRAKE EXPLORE?

  • He started his explorations in 1553.
  • When he was 12 he started to sail around the world.
  • 1567 he brought slaves to the New World.
  • 1572 he lead his ships in attacks against Spanish seaports,settlements and ships.
  • He led the second expedition to sail around the world in a voyage lasting from 1577 to 1580.

WHY DID DRAKE GO EXPLORING?

  • He loved the sea.
  • When he was a kid he wanted to learn how to be a sea captain and when he grew up he did.
  • 1567 he brought slaves to the new world.
  • Queen Elizabeth ordered him attack Spanish seaports so that England could claim them for themselves.

HOW DID DRAKE DO HIS EXPLORATIONS?

  • Tools that Drake used were crossbows, arrows, knives, swords and ships.
  • He had a big supply of food and fresh water.
  • He knew where he was sailing by using telescopes and a compass.

  • He found California which led to more British settlements in North America.
  • He increased our knowledge of the earth's plants and animals.
