SIRENOMELIA

AKA MERMAID SYNDROME

FACTS

  • It is a fatal birth defect that causes the legs of a newborn to be attached
  • Occurs in about 1 in 100,000 births
  • More than half of these births end in still birth
  • 100 more times likely to occur in identical twins

WHAT HAPPENS

  • The baby is usually born with an abnormal kidney
  • Cause trouble with the development of the urinary bladder
  • A baby will usually die within days after birth
