IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM

  • It helps us to be able to move
  • Gives our bodies shape and support
  • Helps protect all of our internal organs
  • Makes red blood cells
  • Stores certain materials for later use like calcium

IMPORTANT PARTS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM

Compact bones are very strong and they form the outer layer of bone. It gives us strength.
Spongy bones are very light and are full of holes (like a sponge) every blood vessel or nerve runs through this bone.
Red marrow is a type of soft tissue that helps make red blood cells.
Yellow marrow is a type of soft tissue that is located in the center of our bones. It's mainly made of fat.

The skeletal system affects all other body systems by serving as a body guard to our body. In order for our body to work properly it must have something to keep all the parts and pieces together inside the body.

Each system works together to keep the other one going. It's like a puzzle, if you miss one piece then you can't finish the puzzle. If one system is missing or doesn't work properly then all the other systems come crashing down.

Diseases of the skeletal system include Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Bone Cancer and Leukemia. Arthritis causes your joints to tense up and hurt. Osteoporosis is when your bones weaken because of the loss of bone tissue. Bone cancer causes your bones to become weak. Leukemia is a form of cancer and starts in the bond marrow.

As much as the skeletal system is there to protect you, just like anything else it can be broken. When you were a little kid and you played on the monkey bars outside you might have fallen and broken an arm which is an outside affect on the skeletal system.

FUN FACTS !!!

  • The largest bone is the hip bone (or pelvis)
  • Cartilage rots faster than bone. This is why skulls of skeletons have no nose or ears.
  • 1 out of every 20 people in the world have an extra rib
  • Humans are born with over 300 bones in the body
