FUN FACTS

  • All bones produce red blood cells.
  • There are 206 bones in a mature human’s body.
  • Bones protect internal organs.
  • Bones are made of collagen.

FUNCTIONS

  • Support: provides framework that supports and anchors all soft organs.
  • Protection: skull and vertebrae surround soft tissue of the nervous system, and the rib cage protects vital thoracic organs.
  • Movement: skeletal muscles use the bones as levers to move the body.
  • Storage: fat stored in the interior of the bone . Bone matrix serves as a storehouse for various minerals.

  • The skull protects the brain
  • All bones store and release fat
  • All bones produce red blood cells
  • Bones support the body by keeping our body stable. This most importantly includes the spine.

THE SKELETON CAGE

  • The bones act as a “cage” for the bodies organs.
  • They protect the internal organs from getting damaged.
  • For example: the rib cage is a barrier built around the lungs, to protect the lungs from puncture.

  • Some bones are connected to ligaments and joints.
  • Ligaments:connect the end of bones together in order to form a joint.
  • Joint:structures that connect individual bones and may allow bones to move against each other to cause a movement

DISORDERS AND DISEASES

  • Osteoporosis:this is a disease in which the bones become fragile and prone to fracture.
  • Leukemia:this is a cancer of the white blood cells.
  • Osteopenia, osteitis deformans, and osteomalacia: similar to osteoporosis, these are other types of bone loss.
  • Osteogenesis imperfecta: a rare hereditary disease of connective tissue characterized by brittle bones that fracture easily

  • Diseases and injuries of bones are major causes of abnormalities of the human skeletal system.

KEEPING YOUR BONES HEALTHY

  • Eat calcium;choose dairy products, fish with bones like salmon.
  • Don’t smoke or drink heavily.

Untitled Slide

  • Eat foods with vitamin D
  • Exercise or stretch at least 30 minutes a day.
  • Protect your bones by wearing a seat belt when you are in the car, and a helmet while riding a bicycle.
