Skill-Building 101

  • Cognitive (critical thinking)
  • Non-cognitive (self-motivation, focus)
  • Together, they (or lack thereof) determine "a host of outcomes, including schooling, social behaviors, and labor market success."
  • Skills are BUILT, not born. EVERYONE can build the skills they need to do their best.

What we know about non-cognitive skills

  • "Tests do not adequately capture skills, personality traits, goals, motivations, and preferences that are valued in the labor market, in school, and in many other domains. Their predictive power rivals that of cognitive skills."
