SKIN DISORDERS

WILL GREEN

ATHLETE'S FOOT

  • Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that usually begins between the toes.
  • Creates a scaly rash that usually causes itching, stinging and burning.
  • Athlete's foot is contagious and can be spread via floors, towels or clothing.

BOILS AND CARBUNCLES

  • A carbuncle is a cluster of boils — painful, pus-filled bumps.
  • Carbuncles form under the skin.
  • Boils usually start as red, tender lumps.

COLD SORES

  • Cold sores are tiny fever blisters on the skin.
  • They are fluid-filled lesions that occur on and around your lips.
  • They usually go away within 2 weeks.

DERMATITIS

  • Dermatitis is the inflamation of the skin.
  • This disorder usually involves an itchy rash on swollen, reddened skin.
  • Skin affected by dermatitis may blister, ooze, crust, or flake off.

IMEPTIGO

  • Impetigo is a contagious skin infection that mainly affects infants and children.
  • It usually appears as red sores on the face, especially the nose and mouth.
  • The sores burst and develop honey-colored crusts.
  • It can clear up in 2 to 3 weeks.

PSORIASIS

  • Psoriasis is a common skin condition that changes the life cycle of skin cells.
  • Psoriasis causes cells to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin.
  • The extra cells form thick scales and itchy, dry, red patches that are painful.
  • Psoriasis is a persistent, long-lasting disease.

1ST DEGREE BURNS

  • The least serious burn of all 3.
  • Only the outer layer of skin is burned.
  • The skin will become red and often swell.

2ND DEGREE BURNS

  • More serious than 1st degree burns.
  • The skin will appear wet or moist.
  • Affects first and second layers of skin.
  • Blisters may develop and pain can be severe.

3RD DEGREE BURNS

  • Most serious burn of all 3.
  • Extends to the fat layer that lies under the skin.
  • The skin may appear stiff, waxy white, leathery or tan.
  • These types of burns usually require skin grafts for wound closure.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

  • Basal cell carcinoma is a slow-growing form of skin cancer.
  • Basal cell carcinoma is a type of nonmelanoma skin cancer.
  • It effects even the deepest layers of the epidermis.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

  • Often look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars.
  • Usually caused by a combination of cumulative UV exposure.
  • Almost never spreads beyond the original tumor site.
  • In very rare cases it can spread and become life threatening.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

  • Second most common form of skin cancer.
  • Is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the squamous cells.
  • Occurs on the outer layers of the skin where squamos cell are found.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

  • Looks like red patches, open sores, elevated growthd or warts.
  • They can crust and bleed, causing much pain.
  • Is mainly caused by cumulative UV exposure over the course of a lifetime.
  • It can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow.

MALIGNANT MELANOMA

  • Most dangerous form of skin cancer.
  • Develop when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells.
  • Triggers mutations that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form tumors.
  • Tumors originate in the pigment-producing melanocytes in the basal layer.

MALIGNANT MELANOMA

  • Melanoma often resembles moles on the epidermis.
  • The majority of melanomas are black or brown.
  • Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure.
  • Melanoma kills an estimated 9,710 people in the US annually.

MELANOMA ABCD RULES

  • A - Asymmetry
  • If you draw a line through this, the two halves will not match.
  • B - Border
  • The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven.
  • The edges may be scalloped or notched.

MELANOMA ABCD RULES

  • C - Color
  • A number of different shades of brown, tan or black could appear.
  • Melanoma may also become red, blue or some other color.
  • D - Diameter
  • Melanomas usually are larger in diameter than the eraser on your pencil.
