WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

  • Over 20 million people around the world are forced into slave labor
  • They don't have a choice in the matter

IS IT A GLOBAL PROBLEM?

  • Modern slavery is a definitely a problem
  • It is widespread throughout the world
  • The largest counts of slavery are in Africa, S.E. Asia, and India

TYPES OF SLAVERY

  • Bonded labor
  • Child Slavery
  • Forced Labor
  • Early/Forced Marriage
  • Trafficking

BONDED LABOR

  • People are tricked into loans they can't pay off
  • If they are lucky they will receive basic food and shelter
  • The loans are passed to their children

CHILD SLAVERY

  • Around 5.5 million children are forced into labor
  • This includes the worst forms of child labor and trafficking

FORCED LABOR

  • Affects illegally recruited workers
  • Forced to work under the threat of violence

FORCED MARRIAGE

  • Forced into a life of servitude
  • Affects women who can't make the choice for themselves
  • Have no realistic choice of leaving the marriage

TRAFFICKING

  • Transporting workers forcing them into slavery conditions
  • Slaves can be broken up from their families

WHY WOULD IT BE IMPORTANT TO STUDY?

  • Slavery would be important because it is a part of our history
  • By studying modern slavery we could better understand the past
  • It affects over 20 million people in multiple continents

  • Modern slavery is the best topic because people think slavery doesn't exist
  • After Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation people assumed it was over
  • In today's world people are being treated like animals and they can't do anything about it
