Living conditions in Europe improved

Consequently, fewer people wanted to immigrate to America

In 1641, Massachusetts became the first colony to legalize slavery

The slave trade began as a result of labor shortages from Europe.

Slave women worked especially hard because they had to work in both fields and home.

If slaves didn't completely satisfy their masters orders, they were inhumanely punished.

Slaves lived in rough cabins and were fed a rude diet of meats and cornmeal

Slavery caused family ties to weaken, because of the transmission of slaves

A new language, called "pidgin," formed from mostly English and a little African.

Slave religion drew from Christianity's theme of freedom from bondage

Many slaves, such as Nat Turner, rebelled against their masters

The "Underground Railroad" existed to help slaves escape to the North or Canada
