CAPTURE

  • People sold their own family's out as slaves
  • Those who sold their family had done for better status
  • Slaves were treated better in Africa then in the United States

THE MIDDLE PASSAGE

  • There were many deaths
  • There was not very much room

AUCTION AND SALES

  • Families were split
  • Lives ruined
  • Slaves looked at like animals

WORK ON PLANTATIONS

  • The slaves were given the crusts of bread
  • The skins of meat
  • And they had to do all of the work to make the food
  • The owners took the good food

PUNISHMENT

  • Many people were whipped
  • Even pregnant women were whipped!
  • Had whips made of: raw hide,
  • Fibers from a jungle plant,
  • And they were put in stocks (look at background)

SUFFERING

  • They had no/almost blood family
  • Not very many ways to stay happy
  • "But here in the light of these truth, I was a slave,
  • I could possess nothing, nor acquire anything,
  • But what must belong to master"

RESISTANCE

  • "I have ploughed, planted, and gathered
  • Into barns, and no man could head me!"

  • She was born in 1797
  • Many slaves resisted against the white men

ESCAPE

  • "The captain soon came to advise us to
  • Go on deck for fresh air"
  • -Harriet Jacobs
  • This section was about how the captain of the ship
  • With slaves was nice to the slaves and let them up for fresh air

FREEDOM

  • When set free the slaves were overcome with deep emotion
  • The slaves felt as though part of themselves was given back to them
  • But once the feeling was gone they felt slightly confused of what to do next
