PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SLAVES IN THE CIVIL WAR

UNION ARMY

  • The union army were slow to let blacks fight
  • In May of 1863, they were finally allowed to fight
  • And even though they were allowed to to serve, they weren't in a lot of combat

CONFEDERATE ARMY

THE CONFEDERATES DIDN'T ALLOW THE AFRICAN AMERICANS TO ENLIST

THIS WAS BECAUSE:

  • If they were given firearms they might revolt
  • This has a valid point because the blacks out numbered the whites
  • And Even though this was illegal, some blacks still participated.
  • And most of those who partcipated were cooks, musicians, guards, and scouts
