SMALL POX

CAUSES

  • Small pox is caused by variola
  • Variola is a large virus that contains double stranded DNA
  • Variola infection can only occur in the human body

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • The first symptoms usually appear after 12-14 days
  • After being exposed to the contagious small pox, it gets worst
  • Next you can get high fevers, body aches, muscle and back pains
  • Then you start vomiting and you feel nauseas

EFFECT ON BODY

  • Small pox causes rashes and fluid filled blisters
  • Most people die from small pox
  • People who don't die can experience blindness, scarring(mostly on face)
  • Small pox can also damage your immune system

TREATMENT

  • Small pox vaccine was used to treat small pox during the industrial revolution.
  • We still use this vaccine today (2014!!!)
  • Some ingredients used in this vaccine include: vero cells, human serumalbumin, sodium mannitol USP, meomycin, and polymixin B

DEATH TOLL

  • Over 80% of children died from small pox
  • 20-60% adults/young adults died from small pox also
  • It is very rare to get small pox today
