HISTORY

  • Disease dates back to pre-history
  • Emerged in humans around 10,000 b.c.
  • During 18th century killed 400,000 each year
  • During 20th century killed 300-500 million
  • Eradicated in December of 1979

Smallpox is spread by close contact with the sores or respiratory droplets of an infected person. You are infectious until last scab is separated from the skin.

SYMPTOMS

  • High Fever
  • Chills
  • Malaise (feeling of discomfort)
  • Headache
  • Sever back pain

Treatments:
The smallpox vaccine is the only known way to prevent smallpox in an exposed person. If given within 4 days of viral exposure, it can lower the severity of the symptoms, and provide protection.
