CaUSES OF DISEASE

  • Caused by a virus called the variola virus
  • Death occurs because of overwhelming toxemia
  • Smallpox usually requires fairly prolonged face to face contact to spread
  • Transmitted in saliva

SUGNS/SYMPTOMS

  • Causes a special kind of rash
  • Fever is the most common initial symptom
  • Severe fatigue
  • Mouth sores and blisters

WAYS TO PREVENT

  • A type of shot can prevent infection
  • Keep hydrated
  • Uses the cousin virus to variola
  • Keep infected people isolated

EFFECT ON HUMAN BODY

  • Blisters on skin
  • Legs, arms, mouth, and face
  • Blindness
  • Overall

PATHOGEN THAT CAUSES IT

  • Virus
  • Variola
  • Variola major and variola minor
  • Airborne virus may spread farther

MEDICAL ADVANCEMENTS

  • Get the vaccine
  • Hydrated, fever treated
  • Use vaccine properly
  • Relieve symptoms

DEATH TOLL

  • May exceed one third of population
  • Every one million vaccinate, one person died
  • Few rare varieties of smallpox are always fatal
