CAUSED BY

  • The virus Variola major
  • Other variola can cause it too
  • Spread by contact
  • Spread by being near the infected

SYMOTOMS AND SIGNS

  • Fever
  • Overall discomfort
  • Headache
  • Severe fatigue

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Red pus-filled blisters
  • Severe back pain

OTHER SYMPTOMS

  • Hemorrhaging
  • Blood poisoning
  • Blindness
  • Death

SURVIVIORS

  • They have scars
  • But they are immune to the disease
  • Also an ulceration on the eye could cause blindness

IN THE PAST, TO PREVENT SPREDING,

  • The infected were separated from the healthy
  • The people who came in contact were vaccinated
  • There were hospitals only for smallpox
  • Like this one "The Smallpox Hospital"
  • It was on an island off NYC to isolate it

ERADICATION

  • Isolate cases swiftly
  • Vaccinate people who've come into contact
  • The last case of wild smallpox was in Somalia in 1977
