SMELL

SMELL IS OFTEN OUR FIRST RESPONSE TO STIMULI. IT ALERTS US TO FIRE BEFORE WE SEE THE FLAMES. IT MAKES IS KNOW THAT FOOD IS ROTTEN BEFORE WE TASTE IT.

  • The nasal passages are separated by a wall called the septum
  • the septum is made of cartilage
  • nasal cavity connects with the back of the throat
  • The air then passes down the back of your throat, on its way to the lungs.

The sense of smell, called olfaction, involves the detection and perception of chemicals floating in the air. Chemical molecules enter the nose and dissolve in mucous within a membrane called the olfactory epithelium. In humans, the olfactory epithelium is located about 7 cm up and into the nose from the nostrils.
