• Ishmael Chambers begins to reflect on his  past experiences.
• Ishmael meets up with the sheriff and other fishermen.
• Animosity towards the Japanese begins through the fishermen
• The sheriff and Ishmael make a deal to keep the murder aspect a secret.

The islanders' hatred towards the Japanese begins in this chapter when the islanders have suspicion that Habou killed Carl. Ishmael and the sheriff agree to make a deal to keep the possibility of a potential murder a secret and give the public the perception that Carl's death was in fact an accident.
