Social Media For Today's Nonprofit

Published on Nov 19, 2015

Nonprofits can make great use of social media to raise awareness, gain donors and volunteers. This presentation was part of a training session on which networks to use and how to fit social media into the marketing plan for a nonprofit team.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WHAT IS SOCIAL?

FACEBOOK

IS ABOUT FAMILIARITY
People like to get friendly on Facebook. They don't want to read your broadcast. They want to talk to you. Engage first, ask second (or even third).

TWITTER

IS ABOUT SHARING INFORMATION
Twitter is your virtual ear to the ground. Use it to learn and grow your community of practice.

YOUTUBE

IS ABOUT VISUAL COMMUNICATION
YouTube has amazing resources for nonprofits so there's no excuse to not get to work and use it!

GOOGLE+

IS THE BEST OF FACEBOOK AND TWITTER
The nonprofit community on Google Plus is huge. From Hangouts to circles of all different types of nonprofit you can find quality discussions going on. The best part? You get the immediacy of Twitter and the great links but like Facebook discussion is threaded and easy t o follow.

PINTEREST

IS NOT AS FRIVOLOUS AS YOU THOUGHT
Do a search on Pinterest for nonprofits and you find a wealth of information. Do more than just post a picture. Tell a story, give a call to action and then a link to DO something.

WHY DO WE CARE?

Doing searches to find where your constituents, potential donors and volunteers will show you which networks they use. If they are there you could be missing a vital opportunity to talk to them.

HOW INFORMATION TRAVELS

TODAY
Today we use the internet for the majority of our research. If your nonprofit deals with critical issues you want people to find you. That's a whole lot easier if you leverage the search engine optimization of social to get found more easily.

LETS GET TO IT

This part of the session was all about the nuts and bolts, finding what can work for this particular organization.

I DON'T HAVE TIME!

YES, YOU DO
Social does not have to be a time suck. You just need to focus, organize and know your goals for outreach in the first place. If you flail around trying to think of something to say and end up spending all day on Facebook? Then yeah, you're not going to have time.

HOW WILL WE KNOW

IF WE'RE DOING IT RIGHT?
Social media metrics are easier to come by than you think.
