Face-to-face vs. CMC (cont.)

  • Verbal Cues: In CMC, verbal cues are cues based solely on linguistic content in a message.
  • Extended Time: the elapsed time, is much longer because response does not have to be immediate. This causes relationships to grow at a slower rate.

Extended Time

A crucial variable in CMC

Time & intimacy on the internet

  • Anticipated future interaction: when we look forward to seeing each other
  • Chronemics: how long it takes us to respond or how long we choose to respond

Hyperpersonal Perspective

  • Selective Self Presentation (Sender)
  • Over attribution of Similarity (Receiver)
  • Communicating on your own time (Channel & Asynchronous Channel)
  • Self Fulfilling Prophecy (Feedback)
